PEX Plumbing System
The PEX piping might be new but, it's rapidly expanding. So, getting started with PEX is a must.
In this post we will cover the PEX plumbing, it's properties, types, methods and more.
To, start with we can check out what is PEX and then go into deep of it. That will help you to get all thing about PEX easily.
Definition of PEX
The PEX is an abbreviated word for Cross-linked polythene. It's a special form of plumbing pipe that has great flexibility and insulations. The PEX is a cross-linked polythene pipe with much strength and flexibility. Due to its wide range of facilities, PEX gets mostly used in residential plumbing, hydronic heating, and other applications.
As far as properties the PEX pipes are made with cross-linking. Due to polymer cross-linking, the PEX pipes are more resistant to heat, chemical, freezing temperatures. Additionally, they are also flexible up to 90-degree. Along with this feature, the properties of PEX pipes also let it insulate the inner property from the outside environment.
With proper extrusion process PEX can achieve a great inner structure with a high-density polymer.
Types of PEX
There are three main types of PEX available on the market. However, this type does not indicate the classification of the PEX pipe. Those types of spacially indicate their creating process.
So, here are all the types of PEX pipe that is available to use:
Type A PEX
Those PEX pipes are the most precious pice. Because it has the best flexibility among PEX pipes. This type of PEX pipe also stronger and made with high-quality material. However, as it has more features to offer, the price of this type of PEX pipe is comparably high. It gets mostly used in projects that need highly flexible pipes.
Type B PEX
It's the second category of PEX pipes. It looks like the previous one, but it's little but rigid. Because this type of PEX pipes has built-in memory coil. Which is why these PEX pipes try to come into their original position. Overall, these PEX pips are lower in cost then Type-A.
Type C PEX
This type of PEX pipe is the one that has the lowest flexibility. Due to its low flexibility, it's not perfect for 90-degree angels. If you try to bend them, sometime it may result in kinking. The price of the type C PEX is the lower. It's mostly suitable for short time usage or projects where bending is not necessary.
Except for those types of PEX you can also get oxygen barrier and non-barrier PEX pipes. The oxygen barrier insulates the inner property from the outer surface. Which means it doesn't let the heat transfer to outside easily. And the non-barrier PEX doesn't insulate the inner property and it can transfer heat to the outer environment.
You can use three different kinds of methods to form a PEX plumbing connection.
Here are the methods that apply to PEX connections:
- Copper Crimping Connection: This connection uses copper crimping rings to form a watertight seal during the overlapping area of PEX pipes and the fittings. You would need a crimping tool for the task.
- Stainless Steel Connection: In this method, we use stainless clamp rings from a watertight seal. The crimping tool is the obvious choice to complete a stainless steel connection.
- Expansion Method: Here we use an expansion tool to expand the edge of PEX pipe. While the PEX pipe is expended, we have to just quickly fit the fittings inside it. Then press a plastic ring on the overlapping area of PEX and the fittings.
- Push-to-connect method: In this method, we can use push-to-connect fittings. Just put the edge of the PEX pipe inside the fitting and the built-in stiffener will grab the PEX perfectly. You can use a special disconnector tool to take the fetting out of the PEX piping.
So, those are the methods that you can use to create a PEX plumbing connection.
PEX plumbing has several advantages to count off. Here are all the advantages you will get from PEX plumbing:
- PEX Plumbing is flexible and does not break or leak.
- As it doesn't require fittings in 90-degree angles, it also saves the cost of extra fittings.
- It's resistance to corrosion and chemicals.
- PEX does not melt when it gets in touch with fire.
- The PEX pipes are highly resistant to freezing temperatures and freezing related leaks.
- It's suitable for potable water usage.
- The water flows quietly through PEX pipes.
- Heat resistance and it is also suitable or hydronic heating usage.
Those are the advantages you will get from the PEX connections.
Even if you get a full set of advantages with PEX pipes, it also carries some kind of disadvantages. Here are all the disadvantages you will get from your PEX pipes:
- PEX pipes get damaged when it gets in contact with direct sunlight.
- The PEX pipes can be victims of pests. Any rat or other insects can start biting your PEX pipes.
